On Blu-ray

A couple of weeks ago Blu-ray won the “format war” over HD DVD on the next DVD generation format. That brings us some “relief” because now we know which way to go and how it’s going to be. But the question is, we really need another physical format instead of digital distribution?.

Blu-ray is a good option now, because it give us full HD content that the online stores like iTunes can’t (but obviously will be able in the near future) and because Internet connections aren’t fast enough, especially in some countries, to manage HD content; but today, Blu-ray it’s just way too expensive.

So, Blu-ray is the winner but it’s gonna take some time to become affordable and popular like the DVD is now. Even being optimistic, it will take about 4 or 5 years. On the other hand the internet connections are growing faster, bandwidth is being doubled every year and more and more people is going online every day.

By the time Blu-ray get ready for the masses, people will be so into digital life that nobody will be happy to get back on discs, cases and stuff like that (iPod and CD’s anyone?).
